There is a version of your customer who has already decided to buy. They have read everything. They are holding their card. They just have one question. At 11pm on a Tuesday, nobody answers it.
Let me describe a specific person. They have spent 40 minutes on your website. They have read your product page three times. They have compared you against two competitors and decided you are the better choice. They are ready to buy — except they cannot figure out if you ship to their location, or whether the premium version includes the feature they need.
It is 11:12pm. Your business closed at 5pm. Your chat widget says “We are offline.” So they do one of two things: they find the answer on a competitor’s website who does have live chat. Or they close the tab intending to come back tomorrow — and they never do.
You never know this happened. Your analytics show a session. Your conversion shows nothing.
How Often Does This Actually Happen?
In the retail and ecommerce businesses I work with, 55% to 67% of website sessions happen outside standard business hours — evenings, early mornings, weekends. This is when people actually have time to make purchasing decisions: not during their workday, but in the margins around it.
Of those after-hours sessions, a meaningful percentage involve customers with a specific pre-purchase question. A significant portion of them would have converted with an instant answer. Those are the customers you are losing without a record of having lost them.
The most dangerous revenue loss is the invisible kind. You cannot fix what you cannot see. After-hours lost sales are, by definition, invisible.
What an AI Response at 11pm Looks Like
Not a generic chatbot saying “someone will get back to you.” A trained AI that knows your product range, shipping policies, pricing tiers, and FAQs — answering the specific question this customer has, in under two seconds, in language that sounds like your brand.
“Yes, we ship to British Columbia. Standard delivery is 3–5 business days. If you order before midnight tonight, it qualifies for Friday delivery. Want me to add that to your cart?”
That is the difference between a sale and an abandoned session.
